Singapore’s society is pretty much fucked up nowadays: Anti-foreigner sentiments, disillusionment with the ruling party, pressurizing education system breeding elitism on one end and disrespectful, ungrateful brats on the other, widening divide between the rich and poor, costs of living increasing over generations… Probably more, but this is just the tip of the ice-berg and it already is one problem too many.
I don’t know, are we developing for better or for worse?
As I ponder I’m reminded of one of my favourite quotes from Super Sad True Love Story:
“Every returning New Yorker asks the question: Is this still my city? I have a ready answer, cloaked in obstinate despair: It is. And if it’s not, I will love it all the more. I will love it to the point where it becomes mine again.”
Do we love our country enough to make it ours again? Do I love my country enough to make it mine again?
